Franklin - A Sparkling Gem for Outdoors Enthusiasts
Through municipal, county and state efforts, Franklin Township has been able to preserve over 9,000 acres, ensuring retention of Franklin’s rural landscape, together with access to a great assortment of recreational activities.
Residents and visitors can enjoy kayaking, canoeing, fishing, camping, horseback riding or just a quiet afternoon picnic on the banks of the Delaware and Raritan Canal – a beautiful waterway that runs the length of Franklin Township and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
Nature Lovers Welcome
Visitors can marvel at Colonial Park and its 542 scenic acres with playgrounds, fishing ponds and playing fields. The park includes a 5.5-acre arboretum and the famous Rudolf Van der Goot Rose Garden, resplendent with 3,000 roses of nearly 300 varieties.
There are over 50 miles of trails in the township; some pass along the edges of meadows; some wander through forests, and others offer scenic vistas of mountain ranges over 21 miles to the west. Hikers can find multiple trails at Six Mile Run State Park, located on 3,000 acres of farmland and forests in the heart of the Township. These trails are a key component of Franklin’s Open Space Program, with the State park and the township’s nature preserves and natural areas giving residents and visitors the opportunity to visit working farms and shop from a variety of local Farmer’s Markets.
